I want to welcome all students and parents to our PACE blog where I will post updates and announcements regarding everything PACE! I am hopeful this will give you another direct link to the program and to me. END OF YEAR FOR PACE STUDENTS

As the end of the school year nears, PACE students are presenting their months long research projects, completing their classic novels, and gearing up for PACE FAMILY NIGHT where the live auction gives students a chance to spend their well earned Weaver’s Wages. We will have a potluck dinner and desserts at the BG MIDDLE SCHOOL CAFETERIA on Monday, May 22, 2017 5:30 – 7:30 PM.

PERENNIAL MATH TOURNAMENT COMES TO BG!

Our 2nd Perennial Math Tournament was held Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the PAC and BGMS. There were 167 students and 32 teams competing for individual and team awards. All winners are now eligibe for the Nationals Virtual Tournament in May which will feature students and team across the U.S.

Many thanks to Dr. Sylvia Dean and her staff, Tom and Craig Dean for bringing the math tournament to Bowling Green from Huntsville, AL. We enjoyed the games, competition, and the opportunity to meet students, teachers, and parents from surrounding schools.

PACERS Learn to Communicate Without Words

Sue Larimer – Sign Language Teacher at BGCA

PACE students learned more about our theme, “COMMUNICATION” with the help of Marta Crow, former Penta teacher and Sue Larimer, teacher at Bowling Green Christian Academy. Both speakers taught students the American Sign Language alphabet, as well as how to sign colors, numbers, common phrases and items, and “slanguage.” All classes enjoyed learning how to sign to each other and communicate without speaking. Following the lessons, students made clay hands depicting their favorite sign or form of communication using their hands. The classes were also featured in The Sentinel-Tribune and The BG Independent. Many thanks to Ms. Bailey, art teacher at Kenwood for all her help with the clay projects!

Growth Mindset and Student Potential

growth-image-1Many thanks to our Principal Kathleen Daney who is guiding our teachers in the study of Growth Mindset. On her blog this week, she posted two excellent resources in regards to this concept and a video, “How to help every child fulfill their potential” and the chart above. General Election Voting starts tomorrow!

Wood County Election Committee Board Director Terry Burton has set up the electronic voting machine in the PACE classroom and the General Election will begin tomorrow with the sixth grade class.  Students must present their Voter Registration Cards before casting their ballot. YAY!!

The ballot will include the following candidates and proposals for new laws:

President-Elect – Todd W. Peters (Democratic Party)

Vice-President-Elect – Maria Singer (Natives Party)

President – Harold Thompson (Democratic Party)

Vice-President- Elect – Eily Poteet (Lyrian Party)

Proposed Laws:

  • Eliminate the Electoral College and establish new voting laws
  • Men and women will be paid equally
  • Strict gun control and weaponry laws need to be established including extreme weaponry such as knives, semi-automatics, and automatics.
  • The government should keep gas prices fair and equal across the country and enforce price gouging.
  • Animal abuse laws should be more strict and established
  • Fines for littering should be increased and more strictly enforced
  • Factories will be made more environmentally safe
  • All Americans will be provided food, shelter, and healthcare in the U.S.
  • Education should be completely funded by Federal Government
  • People of all races must be treated with respect. (hate crimes and current enforcement should remain)

Independent Study Research Project

All Students Have An I.S. Research Packet In Their PACE Folders For Reference. Parents Are Encouraged To Look Through  It  And Offer Help As Needed. 

This project is designed to help students learn college level skills such as research, MLA citation, writing source cards and note cards, creating an outline, typing a works cited page, creating a PREZI online for the presentation portion, and providing a thesis statement to defend through research and presentation. This is not an easy task, but it can and is done each year by all grades 3-6.

Parents are not responsible for making any products or doing the research. This project helps students learn time management, discipline, and how to predict a goal and work towards accomplishing it within a time frame and using a plethora of resources. However, parents ARE encouraged to keep an eye on progress at home, sign any progress related papers I send home, and help students map out a good plan for the project.

NOTE: If students are struggling to find enough research or can’t find sources for their topics, please contact me IMMEDIATELY! Those who have told me they have changed topics have been advised to put extra time into research at this point in January. Also, any student struggling with sources that I know of, have also been told to either broaden the topic with a discussion with parents or change topics.

PROJECT TIMELINE:

January – ALL grades should have 10+ note cards done. 6th graders should have 2-3 subtopics completely researched by end of January. 3-5 grades should have 1-2 subtopics completely researched.

What is completely researched?

If I asked a student to tell the class about the subtopics they have researched to date, they should be able to cover those subtopics with plenty of note cards to help us understand those elements of the topic to date.

February – 6th graders should be nearly done with all topics, completed at least one Bloom’s product, and working on Prezi. 3-5th grades should be working on completion of remaining subtopics and will start their Prezi work midway through the month.

March – SPRING BREAK! If students are planning to go on trips, it is wise to get work done before the trip. This is an entire week which allows down time from other academics, but also a time where Bloom’s Products could be made and created. Also, students can be working on Prezi without the added school work. They will have more time to be creative with their research and the Prezi. March is also the month for finalizing all plans and preparing to present topics in April ( around state testing days )

April – Final research if needed for all grades, presentation dates are determined, Bloom’s products completed, audience participation planned, outline typed, works cited typed, Prezi finished by date of presentation.

APRIL/MAY – presentations given in class

Students in all grades should be doing the following at home for the I.S. Research Project:

  • Research each week and make source cards and note cards with information which will be used in the Prezi presentation piece. 
  • Source cards should be written in MLA citation style. Students have packets with examples to follow and they can also use Purdue Owl at this site:  Purdue Owl for MLA Citation of Sources
  • Developing Bloom’s Products based on ideas from the assignment in the packet
  • (Bloom’s Wheel)
  • Students need to determine an audience participation portion of their presentation as they near the end of the research period. 
  • Sources: FOUR different sources are required for research. This means four different TYPES of sources such as books, the Internet, magazines, newspapers, dvds, tv shows, movies, reference books (encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, etc…)
  • Students are required to conduct an interview over the course of their years in PACE. If a student is a sixth grader and has NOT done one, they are required to do one this year. 
  • Plan to do a SET AMOUNT OF WORK each day/week to avoid getting behind. 

I.S. Reading Projects with Classic Novels

PACERs will begin selecting and reading a classic novel for their independent reading project soon! I am introducing the classic novels to all grades and they have been perusing some of the books which are considered classics and are available for reading. A parent letter will be heading home to help parents determine a suitable book for each student.

This project is designed from a high school level reading project and encourages student ownership with reading challenging material and different genres. I’ve listed some of the characteristics and activities which will be part of the project:

  • Students select book titles based on understanding of classic novel genre
  • Students research book content and compare to reading levels and maturity of themes in book selections.
  • Parents  AND teacher must sign a reading approval for the book choice.
  • Parents, teacher, and peers will collaborate with readers and make comments on their journal entries and reading comprehension skills.
  • Students will write an analytical paper draft and create a small writing, art, or media product about their novel.

PUBLISHED BOOKS STARTING!

Packets for this year’s published books are going out with each 3-5 PACE class. Even if parents choose NOT to order a book, please sign and return to class by Friday, February 10th. These are great books for students to show their creative writing and drawing skills. This year’s PACE theme is “Communication” and we will focus on the theme, along with feature photos from this year’s activities in the book. Once the order forms go to the publisher, books will not be available to order as they print only the specific number of books for our class. publishing-books
